Update 10/16/08: Ferguson graduated beginner obedience today! What a GOOD BOY! Update 10.6.08: Things are going well with Ferguson. Now that he has learned what sitting is all about we have been getting some real training in. Ferg has gotten much better with not jumping up. He still paws at me quite a lot, but I prefer pawing to knocking me over. He will graduate from obedience class soon. He does very good down stays, but the sit stays leave a little to be desired... He will need a lot of work with coming when called. He is walking nicely on a leash when there is little to no distraction. He had a slight interaction with an overly aggressive dog who lunged at him, but he kept it to a vocal level and did not respond violently otherwise. Ferg is still mouthy right when I let him out of the dog bedroom.Other
than that he doesn't really mouth much anymore. I have not been crating
him for the last 2 weeks or so. Nothing has been destroyed. I think
he just lays on the bed till the door opens again. He actually goes
to the room by himself (or with very little guidance). I think he
likes not being crated. Update: 8/15/08: Ferg is safely in PA and is busting to get out and have some fun! He's a wild child with no manners and no sense of appropriate behavior. On the plus side, he's been great with the foster's teeny tiny dogs and her female dane. From the foster: Ferg decided to use Mimi (an Italian greyhound) as a head rest. It was adorable. He really is a sweet boy. I think as soon as he learns what is appropriate and what is not he will have no problems finding a home. I took Ferguson to PetsMart for his first obedience class (which turned out to be postponed) and he got a GREAT reaction from people, bad manners and all! I think he is beginning to understand the routine. He seems to be settling in well. Oddly he has begun to eat less. This is a bit worrisome because he still has a ways to go before he starts to look "healthy". He is done with his beds and his scrotum is looking much better. I am very relieved that we did not have to do more surgery. His obedience starts this Thursday if things do not get delayed again. He is getting better already. He is not as mouthy. He jumps up less. With some help I think I can whip this boy into shape and he will have no problems being adopted. The crate that was donated is too small for him. Thus far he has been doing fine being in the bedroom alone. He had a slight issue where he rubbed his nose raw 2 days in a row. But I bought a plug in the emits pheromones to calm him down. Its seems to work well. He hasn't rubbed it open since. He hasn't had an accident in the house at all. I am actually worried that if he was left in a crate he might hurt himself. He has various scars on his head and body that appear to be from the kennel. I think he has some slight abandonment issues, but who doesn't? He does do some inappropriate chewing every so often, but if given
an appropriate alternative he stops immediately. I think the worst
of it is my arms, and my legs... but every so often he goes for a
remote. Last week the dogs opened the mail for me. I don't think he
was to blame. I am pretty sure he just joined in on the fun after
one of the girls started it. Original: Ferguson is a 2 year old black male with cropped
but flopped ears. He came from an animal shelter where his owners
turned him in. He gets along with male and female dogs, large and
small. His cat test went very well, but we do not know how he is with
children. Ferguson is a bit rough around the edges in the manners
dept. An obedience course will work wonders for this boy, he is so
excited to get rubs, love and attention from humans, he gets carried
away. Someone with time to work with him on obedience can make a huge
difference in a short time. He appears to be house trained and is
in good health. Ferguson is a fence jumper, so a six foot fence is
required. He does not load well in a vehicle at this point, doesn't
seem to know what riding is all about. Once in the vehicle, he does
very well. Ferguson came to MAGDRL in July 2008.
Moose
Update 10/16/08: Moose is a sweet boy who would be happy to spend his entire day and night by your side being petted and played with. He enjoys walks and is doing well walking with the use of a Halti. We are working on walking by dogs from neighborhood yards who bark at him, and he is improving in this area with each walk. Moose has been receptive to various adults on the street coming up slowly to greet him. However, if someone approaches him at the fence in my backyard, he will bark at them while he backs away. He likes being outdoors as long as his person is there to play with him or if there is an active puppy staying at my house who will keep Moose occupied. Otherwise, he will just bark, even if he has the company of more sedentary dogs. He will chase a squeaky ball in my fenced enclosure, gingerly pick it up and return it to my vicinity. We are working on him dropping the ball more consistently and closer to me. He seems amazed at himself when he steps on the ball and it squeaks! It takes Moose some time to adjust to new situations and new people in my house. He is having some separation anxiety when he knows I am leaving the house. He is currently on Fluoxetine to help him in his adjustment. He will shred a blanket or towel left in his crate, but outside of the crate, he has not demonstrated this behavior. He frequently will salivate excessively while I am away and he is in his crate. Moose gets along with the variety of dogs who visit my home from puppies to other large dogs. Moose plays gently with other dogs and doesn't mind when the small dogs sit on him or share the couch with him. He knows, Sit, Stay, Down and Cage/Crate and we are working on Off. He has learned to take a treat from my hand which he would not do when he first came. Moose needs someone who will not let him get away with being pushy
for attention. I make him sit in order to be petted, to play ball
etc. He pushes upwards on my arms to get attention and then will use
his body to lean on me if I ignore him. He has no food aggression
or resource guarding with other dogs, nor has he demonstrated any
of the guarding behavior with me. He does not have access to open
trash cans which might cause a guarding scenario to develop. Original 10/4/08: Moose just came into rescue and is being
evaluated. He was turned in for guarding food with a child and will
not be placed with children. He's good with other dogs and with cats
but is overwhelmed by new situations and lots of change. a full writeup
will be available soon.
Max
Update 10/27/08: Max is adjusting well in his new foster home. He plays very well with the foster's 12 lb male daschie, and is learning to get along with her assertive shepherd. He's great with kids and is a very sweet and loving boy. Max was originally thought to be 4 yrs old but his foster mom is sure he's much younger-his activity level and his puppy antics make him more likely to be 2. He was turned into the shelter for separation anxiety, and the foster home sees some of this but some is also just a 2 yr old getting into things. He's had a few issues in the house with the other large dogs-if they start something, Max is swift to make sure they know he's king of the castle. For this reason, he'll need to go with a submissive dog or one who won't get snarky with him. He will jump a baby gate to get to his people. Original 10/16/08: Max just came into rescue and is being
evaluated. He was turned in to the shelter for separation anxiety,
so we'll be watching for signs of this. He's good with other dogs
as long as they don't get snappy with him. We suspect he'll have to
be placed with a submissive female. a full writeup will be available
soon. Max came into rescue in October 2008.
