Babe

Age?

4 yrs old

8/15/08 Update: Babe was recently diagnosed with a low thyroid, which may account for her skin allergies and hair loss. Thyroid problems have also been linked with aggression, so we're waiting to see if her dislike of strangers eases up. She will be starting on thyroid meds asap (meds cost about $30 for a 2-3 month supply). She's also being treated holistically for her allergies and they seem to be improving. Her foster mom is fixing a homemade diet for her that seems to agree with her.

Babe will also be seeing a behaviorist for temperament testing and behavior modification program, so we're hoping that this little girl's personality will start to shine through her fears. Stay tuned for progress reports.

9/1/07 Update: Well we celebrated our one year anniversary with Babe on April 3rd. Babe is a nice dog but she does not get along well with everyone. For starters she doesn't get along with other dogs big or small. She would probably do best as the only dog in the family. She is, however, very close to my dane, Vegas, most of the time so there is hope that with time and patience she could get along with another dog. With regards to humans, she is leery of all strangers, especially men. She takes a long time to warm up to people and is very suspicious of people that enter our home or that we encounter on our walks. Quick movements scare her and anything that seems out of the ordinary to her rattles her. She has never been aggressive towards children but due to her unpredictable nature I would recommend she go to a home with older children or none at all.

Babe has also taken several trips to the vet this year. Nothing serious but definitely a challenge to get a handle on. She's been treated for possible food allergies, got a full course of treatment for mange and has finally been diagnosed with severe allergies. She has had several ear infections related to the allergies and has lost hair in spots all over her body from scratching and biting at herself. It took about 6 months to get her diagnosed and started on treatment. Oral antihistamines were not enough for her so she has started on allergy vaccines. She is doing well on them now but will require allergy shots about every three weeks probably for the rest of her life.

We discovered a hematoma on her right ear a few months ago. It was drained and she was treated with steroids injected into her ear. Although Babe was facing possible surgery to repair thehematoma on her ear the steroids worked and the hematoma resolved. Just last week she developed a hematoma in her left ear. The vet drained it and we are keeping our fingers crossed that she will not need surgery to fix her ear.

Now for the good part! Babe is a silly, sweet dane when she is around those she is comfortable with. She is also the most "talkative" dog I know. She makes the funniest grunts and moans when she wants something, when you talk to her or while she is dreaming. Her goofy faces and noises always keep us laughing. Babe is also a velcro dane to some extent. She generally follows me around everywhere although she is perfectly comfortable lounging with my dane around the house. Sometimes it's hard to believe that she even has a suspicious bone in her body.

5/29/06 Update: Babe is doing very well in her foster home. She is good buddies with the foster's male dane, although she has nipped him a few times. It took her a long time to get along well with the current dane and she is aggressive towards other dogs she has met. The foster feels that she would do better as an only dog or with a very low key dog or maybe obedience training would help.

Babe is house and crate trained and does well in the house when left alone for a couple of hours. She has a huge fear of men when she does not know them. She cowers, runs away from them and hides in a corner and will urinate on the floor. We don't know her history but this isn't the first male that scared her so she may have been abused in the past.

Babe is a very loving dog who loves attention, toys and playing outside. She will make a great companion.

5/9/06 Update: The lump on Babe's foot has been totally removed and is healing well. She is doing very well in her foster home, getting along just fine with the male Dane there. She has also mastered come, stay and sit and is beginning to learn other commands as well.

Original: Babe came to us from a local shelter where she was dumped by her owners who said they had no time for her. She is a very sweet 3 year old fawn who is current on her shots. We do not yet know whether she has been spayed. She is being treated for worms, which may account for her skinny frame. She is currently scared to death but is coming around slowly. She seems to get along very well with other dogs and had a grand time running around a play yard yesterday getting some much needed exercise. She also has some type of lump of one of her paws which we will have the vet address shortly.

10/9/08:Come one come all to the the most beautiful fawn dane in the world. She's lean, long ,and she gets along with just about everything. She has a very playful personality. If given a choice between walking, sleeping, aerating or playing she would pick play hands down. She lopes, she runs, she hops and yes she even digs just a bit. She enjoys a quick game of fetch and when she settles down she likes to crawl into your lap and get hugs and belly rubs. She has a very healthy appetite although she is a bit to lean for me. I would love to see about ten more pounds on her but with her playing all the time it is hard to get her to where she should be on the scale.
She enjoys nap time in her crate and she is wonderful at night when she sleeps with her foster family. She is crated during the day when no one is home because of her love for playing. She is still in a bit of a chewing stage so you have to keep you shoes hidden. I expect her to soon grow out of this, She is currently living with four other large dogs and four cats. She also enjoys watching birds in their cage. She likes to play with the cats but I will not allow her to go to a home with cats if the cats can not put her in her place. The cats must be willing to stand their own ground and tell her that they mean business when they say "no".

She only has one bad habit which we are working hard to change. She gets so excited to play outside she sometimes forgets to do her business outside. This usually happens first thing in the morning or after she has been in the crate for a long time while we are at work. Her foster family is waiting until she does her business outside then she gets a "Good girl and a treat" she is responding better to this and no accidents for a couple of days now. Lets hope this works. LOL

10/4/08 Quick update: Brandi and her sister were separated, as brandi tended to bully Kahlua. She's now in a foster home with several other danes and is having a great time with the family's 2 yr old female dane! She is living with cats but seems a bit too interested in them and will chase, so we think no cats. She is not housetrained and the foster home has started to work to fix this. She will not go home with a family until she is more reliable in the house.

Original 7/08: Brandi is an approximately 2 year old fawn female with natural ears. She came to rescue back in June, along with her sister Kahlua, and were placed together in a family. Unfortunately due to changes in work hours, Brandi has come back to rescue. Though Brandi and Kahlua have been together their entire life, we feel that as long as the family each one goes to has another dog, they can be separated. If they both are adopted by the same family, they would be best off without any other dogs in the home. Brandi is very loving with her people, and loves to snuggle with them. She walks well on a leash and enjoys car rides. Brandi is fine with children, but we do not know how she is with cats. She is the more dominant of the pair. Brandi came to MAGDRL in July 2008.

10/16/08 Update:Kahlua is really coming into her own in her foster home. She's best buds with the male dane and has made friends with other dogs she's met. She knows sit/ down/stay. She won't use the doggie door but she is going outside to pee and poop. We are getting a routine down, so I know her signs. She definitely dances to warn me when we go to the door, and she puts her paw on it to go out.

Kahlua is crate trained and does well with a routine. She wakes me up every morning at 5:30 to go pee, and returns to bed. She talks to me when I am asleep to wake me up. She is a doll.

10/4/08 Update: Kahlua was separated from her sister since Brandi bullied her and Kahlua seemed to have no personality of her own. Now that she's away from her, and living with another male dane, she's really come out of her shell.

Kahlua is gorgeous, and loving Great Dane. She has wonderful manners. She takes food from my hand very gently, walks on a leash perfectly, and loves to cuddle. Kahlua follows me everywhere, and loves to play tag in the back yard. Her first day with me, she met three horses, five dogs, and three cats. There were no problems with anyone. If anything she was a little shy with my Dane at first, but warmed up to him immediately after taking a nice walk together. She is an angel with my cats, and likes to talk to them. She loves everyone she meets, including men. She knows sit, and lie down, and is learning to come and stay. She is the perfect little lady, and I love having her with me. Kahlua has no issues with sharing food, toys, the couch, or my bed! She does loves to ride in the car, and after soaking in the fresh air, quietly lies down. Kahlua gets really excited when I get the leash to go for a walk. She has been hiking with me and her foster brother, and enjoys every minute of it! She isn't afraid of thunderstorms, or any loud noises. What a great girl she is. She definitely loves the company of another dog, especially one that likes to play cat and mouse, and have the zoomies together. She deserves the best, as she is a wonderful companion, hiking buddy, and snuggler.

Kahlua is not housetrained and the foster home has started to work to fix this. She will not go home with a family until she is more reliable in the house.

Original 7/08: Kahlua is an approximately 2 year old black female with natural ears. She came to rescue back in June, along with her sister Brandi, and were placed together in a family. Unfortunately due to changes in work hours, Kahlua has come back to rescue. Though Kahlua and Brandi have been together their entire life, we feel that as long as the family each one goes to has another dog, they can be separated. If they both are adopted by the same family, they would be best off without any other dogs in the home. Kahlua is very loving with her people, and loves to snuggle with them. She walks well on a leash and enjoys car rides. Kahlua is fine with children, but we do not know how she is with cats. She is the more submissive of the pair and will take a bit longer to adjust to a new home. Kahlua came to MAGDRL in July 2008.

Update 11/16/08: It took her a bit, but she is settling into her foster home. She is housebroken, but does need to be let out when its time. She is a quiet, calm girl. She is hesitant around new people, and will drop her head and back up a step when they reach out to pet her, but eventually warms up enough for quick gentle greetings. She spent all of her life with her former owner, an adult woman, and has attached herself clearly to her foster mom. She follows her foster mom all about the house, and will watch from the front door or living room window if her foster mom steps outside. In her foster home, she lives with a small blind male dog, a cockatiel and a tall deep-voiced teen aged human brother and does well with all. She has been exposed to children, adult men and strange women and while she ducks her head and tries to hide behind foster mom a bit, she is non-aggressive, and not fearful, simply hesitant...best to let her warm up on her own. She loves her walks, and follows happily along, but tires after about a quarter mile or so. She is low in the back end, and does occasionally seem to have soreness in her left front leg. She has some difficulty getting up into a car or SUV, but likes the ride once she is inside. When happy, she tries a bit of the Dane lean, but really just aligns her body and then doesn't actually lean. She does some of the "wwrrooing" vocal which is very cute, and will take your wrist very softly in her mouth if very excited. She also has a habit of pushing between your legs to give "huggies". She weighs only about 110 pounds, and is eating food more consistently once the feeding method was changed. She is a sweet older lady.

Update 10/16/08: Sable is settling in to her foster home. She did a little happy jumpy dance and took my wrist in her mouth when I got home from work last night. She does enjoy the walks that we go on. I think she is still confused, but maybe some of the sadness is lifting a bit.

Original 10/04/08: Sable just came into rescue and needs to be evaluated. Her writeup will be available soon! She was turned in because the owner lost her house. She is very sad.

Ellie

merle

Update 10.27.08: Ellie Bells is a very nice girl who is quite upset by change and unsure of people she doesn't know. She will require some time in rescue to more fully understand her fears and to teach her to better adapt to changes. Ellie has come to trust her foster mom and, after more than a week of being unsure of foster brother Huey, has decided he's too pathetic to be concerned with. She now tries to play with him. Ellie is crate trained and has also had formal obedience training. She's fine in the house when she learns the routine, but takes days to adjust to new people and does not like strangers. She barks to make sure everyone goes away. In the house, she'll whine when she's unsure. She's also a talker...she wrooo-wroos at her foster mom when she's happy or excited.

Ellie is housetrained and walks well on leash. She can be low energy and is happy to settle down and be in the room with her people. Because she doesn't like change, she would not do well in a busy household, but instead would flourish in a home where there is a defined routine and things are relatively quiet. She's a guarder--of her house, her people, her things. We're working to make sure this doesn't become an issue. Despite her worries, Ellie Bells is an easy dane to live with, and will make a good dane for the right home. She is not for first time dane owners and will require gentle redirecting.

Original 10/16/08: Ellie just came into rescue and needs to be evaluated. Ellie was extremely frightened her first few days in her new foster home and it took her days to warm up to her foster mom. She spent days watching the windows for her family, and whined the whole time. She's starting to warm up but continues to be very skittish around the other foster dane. She walks very well on leash and loves her toys. She is crate trained. a full writeup will be available soon.

Hailey *** NEEDS A FOSTER HOME*****

B-day

3/1/2003

Color

Harle

Update 11/16/08: Hailey is doing very well with leaving when given a bone and not able to practice the behavior she's learned at the door. She needs a home that can provide her with clear direction.

Original 11/2/08: Hailey is a beautiful, smart harle girl who is not good with kids. She was a great dog when her original owners were a couple but now that they're parents, Hailey is rough with their 2 yr old and jealous. Hailey is active and in good shape, and would be great for an active adopter who likes a dog on the go or for a city dweller who likes walking and dog parks.

Hailey is good with other dogs, large and small, and was often taken to the dog park in the past. She walks well on leash and is currently living without a fence and stays within the yard's boundaries. She knows sit, down, shake/paw, come when called. She loves to play with her frisbee and, inside, her stuffies. She seems happy to share but loves a good game of tug and keep away.

Hailey is very anxious when her family leaves and barks anxiously as they leave by the door. If reprimanded for barking, she'll growl. This behavior needs to be worked on, by first avoiding goodbyes at the door, redirecting with stuffed kongs and bones, distracting with radio/tv noise and praising heavily with treats for appropriate behavior. To help her, she's currently on xanax.

About 2 years ago, Hailey was detained at Los Angeles airport because her crate did not pass FAA regulation and she was delayed at a kennel there for 3 days. When she finally arrived to PA she was emaciated and frightened. This has most likely contributed to her fear.

WIth visitors, Hailey is all leans and love. She did not like it when the evaluator left and showed her displeasure by bark/growling and snapping at air. Again, this is specific behavior that can be worked on and may not manifest in a different home.

Hailey is not for first time dane owners but would be fine with someone who's owned a dog before and is able to provide structure and direction. She feeds off of the emotions of her people and is anxious if they are, etc.

Daphne

B-day

6/2006

Color

Harle

Original 11/8/08: Daphne is an energetic and loving 2.5 year old female harlequin dane. She loves nothing more than to run and play and it can be argued that she actually smiles when she sees the tennis ball signaling a future romp. Daphne also loves to play with dogs and gets along with everyone, big and small. After some play time, she curls up in a ball and snores the night away. She has had limited exposure to kids, but has proved excellent so far. She is currently living with a ten month old baby and has been gentle and extremely tolerant. Daphne adores people and is a bit of a shadow, always as close to her people as she can get. She is 120 pounds of lap dog and can find a way onto any lap at any time. Daphne is full of love and can be pretty excitable when she gets some love back. She does bark when the doorbell rings and is excited to greet the new people, but settles down quickly. Daphne is crate trained and does very well in cars. She is a beautiful dog and the pictures don't do her justice. Her family is heartbroken to lose this gem of a pup, but a baby and another on the way and cannot give Daphne the time that she deserves. Daphne did break a leg in February of 08 and had surgery to repair the broken bone. She recovered excellently and fully.
