Love a Dane with Special Needs

If you've got a big heart and are looking for a wonderful companion, consider helping a dane who is truly in need of rescue. Danes with special medical needs are just as loving and goofy as those without, but have a much harder time finding someone to take a chance on them. Here are a few of the most common medical conditions, along with an estimated cost for treating the condition (if any).

Condition

Thyroid Deficiencies

insufficiency of the thyroid gland. In danes, most commonly hypothyroid.

Treatment: MAGDRL typically pays for blood tests (FULL Thyroid panel recommended) and begins monthly thyroid meds.

For more info: on thyroid ~ More on thyroid ~ Symptoms and reading test results

monthly meds (@$30/month), yearly blood tests

Lyme Disease

tick-borne disease. Not uncommon in moutainous regions (for MAGDRL, this is every state in which we operate, especially, NY, PA, VA areas)

Treatment: Blood tests to determine disease. A round of antibiotics.

For more info: on lyme ~ on lyme vaccine

Vet teaching hospitals do not recommend the Lyme vaccine. Antibiotics may be required if flareup occurs.

Addison's Disease

adrenal fail to produce enough cortisol to break down energy-containing nutrients

Treatment: ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone) stimulation test. Conventional drugs or alternative treatments such as Chinese herbs.

For more info: on Addison's Disease
