What Is a Meet & Greet?
A meet & greet is an event where we meet
and greet the public and, while we're at it, tell them all about Danes
and rescue. It's a chance to socialize your Dane, do something for rescue,
and enjoy the company of fellow Dane lovers.
At the M&G, we set up a table. We've got literature
about MAGDRL to hand out, short applications, business cards with local
contact name, and usually some great merchandise for sale. We answer
questions about what our group does, why Danes are in need of rescue,
if we have a saddle for that thing...

Starting a Meet & Greet
in your Area
It may seem daunting at first but it's really pretty simple
to start a M&G in your area. Here are some simple steps for M&Gs
at pet stores:
-
Contact your local PetsMart or PetCo and see if
they have a time slot for you. Remind them that Greyhounds and Great
Danes are different and they probably don't have a _dane_ rescue.
-
Collect the stuff you'll need. While you really
don't need all of the stuff listed, it helps draw attention to the
table.
-
Advertise your event locally and on MAGDRL list.
We've created a list of local names interested in events and e-mail
them whenever something comes up.
-
Go to the M&G. At first, you may be all by yourself,
not even a Dane with you. Pretty soon, though, you'll find people
locally who want to help out. After a few months, you'll have people
who attend regularly and can help out. Hang in there!
-
Contact your local coordinator if you need help
or e-mail me and
I'll help as much as possible!

Please Read:
Only danes who are very well behaved should
attend events.
If your dane does any of the following on a
regular basis (or even more than once, ever), leave your dane
at home and come help out:
- Bark often and loudly: at other dogs, at people, at running
children
- is afraid of children or men or people with hats
- growls or snaps when nervous
- has issues with other dogs, of any size or breed
- does not like to be petted
- doesn't like other dogs or kids in his/her face
We know that your dane is the best dane in the world. A MAGDRL
event is not the place for training dogs, or for dogs who may
have a few teeny tiny issues. If your dane misbehaves, we may
be asked to leave the store or worse, an event might occur.
Please consider your dog's safety as well as MAGDRL's when deciding
whether to bring your dog.

What You'll Need
Most of the stuff you'll need for a meet and greet can
be bought at a dollar store or scrounged up from your own stuff. Total
cost (including tablecloth) usually ranges from $20-35.
Literature
MAGDRL has several tri-fold brochures to hand out at
events. They highlight key points, provide basic information and are
user-friendly. We print these at work, double-sided, and then we fold
them so that there are three panes. Please contact your coordinator
for a link to download the brochures--there are quite a few from which
to choose.
Signup sheet
I've made up a basic signup sheet so that you can collect
info from local people who are interested in volunteering.
The latest list of Available Dogs
In PA & DE, you can go here:
In color, if possible.
business cards
with either your name on them or the name and contact
info for your local coordinator--please check in with your coordinator
on this point. If you are very new, she may prefer to have you use
her cards for a while.
I had mine printed from VistaPrint.com for $4.95/250
cards. Or contact your local coordinator and she'll send you out some
of hers.
Brochure holders
YOu can use napkin holders from the dollar store or
splurge and pick some up at Staples, whichever you'd prefer.
One or more copies of the latest newsletter
If you plan on giving out the newsletter, you should
staple a flyer to it that asks for a donation. The flyer I created
also asks if you'd like to subscribe. I usually print it on some neon
color paper so it's eye catching. I also black out my name and address
from the newsletter and instead copy my business card onto it.
Donation jar
Cash box, pens, event book
- Dollar store - You can use one of those plastic pencil boxes.
- We use it to record the date of the event, how much money we
collected, how much we sold in merchandise. For events, include
contact info and cost to participate. We also include a list of
local resources and our coordinator's info.
Signs
- From a coordinator or make one up. Include MAGDRL's full name
and a cute pix or something.
- If there's a raffle going on, we usually have a sign about
buying raffle tickets.
- I've found that you can ask to mount it on foamcore and have
a stand put on the back for $4.50 or less per sign. Since they're
durable, it's not a bad investment.
Tablecloth
Find someone who can sew!!!! You can email Meredith
Pederson to find out how she makes her pretty tablecloths.
Cost: about $10-25

Tips
- M&Gs can be exhausting for your Dane. We recommend only a
3-4 hour shift.
- Bring a water bowl and a mat for your Dane.
- If your Dane is afraid of children or not good around other dogs,
leave him/her at home. You can introduce your dog to kids and other
dogs in a less stressful place where you'll have more time to devote
to your dog.
- Bring treats to reward your Dane.
