If you've got a big heart and are looking for a wonderful companion, consider helping a Dane who is truly in need of rescue. Danes with special medical needs are just as loving and goofy as those without, but have a much harder time finding someone to take a chance on them. Here are a few of the most common medical conditions, along with an estimated cost for treating the condition (if any).

Wobbler's Syndrome |

Deafness |

Cherry Eye |
prolapse of the gland of the third eyelid. Treatment: MAGDRL typically pays for eye surgery to fix cherry eye. Typically successful. For more info: on cherry eye |

Heartworm |
worms in the heart of the dog, mosquito-borne disease. Not uncommon in southern MAGDRL states. Treatment: MAGDRL typically pays for heartworm treatment, which varies dependingon condition and age of dog and severity of heartworms. For more info: on heartworm |
minimal exercise immediately following surgery. Heartworm preventatives (e.g., heartguard) monthly (est. at $60/3 mo). |
Thryoid Deficiences |

Lyme Disease |
tick-borne disease. Not uncommon in moutainous regions (for MAGDRL, this is every state in which we operate, especially, NY, PA, VA areas) Treatment: Blood tests to determine disease. A round of antibiotics. For more info: on lyme ~ on lyme vaccine |
Vet teaching hospitals do not recommend the Lyme vaccine. Antibiotics may be required if flareup occurs. |
Addison's Disease |
adrenal fail to produce enough cortisol to break down energy-containing nutrients Treatment: ACTH (Adrenocorticotropic hormone) stimulation test. Conventional drugs or alternative treatments such as Chinese herbs. For more info: on Addison's Disease |
Careful monitoring of health to prevent crisis state. Adjustments of medications. Medications can be expensive (est. $60-100/month), depending on treatment selected. |
